Abraham caressing Isaac

Abraham caressing Isaac by Rembrandt van Rijn, circa 1637

Rembrandt captures a surprisingly tender moment between the biblical patriarch Abraham and his young son Isaac in this intimate piece from around 1637. Instead of the dramatic sacrifice scene we usually expect, we see a gentle, bearded Abraham affectionately caressing Isaac, who looks up with a mix of curiosity and trust. The masterful use of light and shadow, typical of the Baroque period, brings incredible texture to Abraham's heavy fur-lined coat and the delicate curls of the boy's hair. You can even spot Rembrandt's signature in the bottom left corner, hinting at the personal touch the artist brought to this biblical story.
