The Valley of Vision
Samuel Palmer was the ultimate countryside dreamer, creating landscapes that feel more like spiritual visions than real places. During his famous 'Shoreham period,' he lived in a tiny cottage he jokingly called 'Rat Abbey' and led a quirky group of artists called 'The Ancients' who worshipped William Blake. Notice the bright white highlights on the clouds and haystacks? Palmer used opaque white paint to make the scene shimmer, turning a simple farm with a shepherd and a walking couple into a glowing, pastoral utopia. He believed the modern world was ruining art, so he retreated to nature to find a mystical, timeless England.
