El carrusel
Géricault was so obsessed with horses that he once rented a room right next to a stable just to watch them move. In this moody study, a dappled grey horse rears up dramatically, but instead of a full rider, there's just a disembodied leg in blue breeches and a tall black boot perched on a bright red saddle cloth. To the left, another horse walks away into the dark shadows, showing off its powerful hindquarters. It feels like a fleeting, energetic snapshot from a riding school, capturing the raw anatomy the artist loved so much.
