The Concert Singer

Thomas Eakins

The Concert Singer by Thomas Eakins

Thomas Eakins was obsessed with realism, so he had singer Weda Cook pose for hours while actually singing to capture the perfect expression. She’s belting out a note—likely from Mendelssohn’s *Elijah*—with her mouth shaped perfectly for the sound. You can see the conductor’s hand in the bottom left keeping time, and a bouquet of roses on the floor, probably tossed by a fan. The way Eakins painted that shiny pink dress makes it look like real silk you could reach out and touch.
