Losbandige dronkenlap; Een paar bij een raam
1879
Tsukioka Yoshitoshi, often called the last great ukiyo-e master, designed this lively scene for an illustrated newspaper in 1879. A couple shares a warm moment by a brazier, the man sipping sake in a fashionable Western-style plaid jacket while the woman laughs joyfully, a shamisen resting nearby. The large block of text at the top reveals this was originally a page from the 'Kanayomi Shinbun,' a brilliant mashup of traditional art and modern journalism intended to compete with the rising tide of photography.
