永遠の門にて
1890
Vincent van Gogh created this heartbreaking image of an old man burying his face in his hands just months before his own death in 1890. Dressed in rough blue work clothes, the figure sits slumped on a simple wooden chair, radiating pure despair and exhaustion. Interestingly, this Post-Impressionist masterpiece is actually a repaint of a lithograph Vincent made eight years earlier, proving that this vision of deep sorrow haunted him for a long time. The frantic, swirling brushstrokes of his blue clothes seem to vibrate with anxiety, contrasting sharply with the heavy stillness of his grief.
