Olive Trees
1889
Van Gogh captured the restless energy of the Provence landscape while staying at the Saint-Rémy asylum in 1889. The gnarled, twisting trunks of the olive trees look almost like human figures reaching out, while the swirling blue and green foliage dances against a bright sky. He used thick, rhythmic brushstrokes to make the ground shimmer with dappled sunlight and shadow. This series of olive groves was deeply meaningful to him, representing the cycle of life and nature's enduring strength amidst his own personal struggles.
