Wheat Field with Cypresses by Vincent van Gogh, 1889

Van Gogh painted this swirling landscape in 1889 while staying at an asylum in Saint-Rémy, France, where he became captivated by the tall, dark cypress trees. He famously described them to his brother as 'as beautiful in line and proportion as an Egyptian obelisk.' The thick, churning brushstrokes make the sky look like it's alive with energy, while the golden wheat field below seems to ripple in the wind. This masterpiece is a prime example of Post-Impressionism, showing how Van Gogh used color and movement to express deep emotion rather than just realistic detail.
