Pl. 20 – The Lamb
1789
William Blake created this page for his 1789 masterpiece *Songs of Innocence*, inventing a unique 'illuminated printing' process to combine his poetry and art. The text of 'The Lamb'—a simple question about creation—is wrapped in twisting vines that frame a peaceful scene of a child tending sheep near a cottage. This imagery represents divine innocence and gentleness, themes central to the Romantic movement's reaction against the industrial age. Blake produced multiple copies of this book by hand, coloring each one differently, making every surviving print a unique work of art.
