Orchid and Bamboo Painting
Zheng Xie, also known as Zheng Banqiao, was one of the 'Eight Eccentrics of Yangzhou' and absolutely loved painting bamboo. In this striking ink wash piece, tall, slender bamboo stalks reach skyward alongside a rugged, towering rock, with a delicate orchid nestled at the base. For Zheng, bamboo wasn't just a plant—it symbolized resilience and integrity, bending in the wind but never breaking. The bold calligraphy on the right adds his personal poetic touch, making this a classic example of the 'Four Gentlemen' theme in Chinese art, where plants represent noble human virtues.
