ベルナルド・ベロット
精密で陰鬱な欧州都市景観
ベルナルド・ベロットは、イタリアの都市風景画家（ヴェドゥータ画家）およびエッチング版画家であり、ヨーロッパの都市（ドレスデン、ウィーン、トリノ、ワルシャワ）を描いたヴェドゥータで有名である。彼は有名なジョヴァンニ・アントニオ・カナール・カナレットの弟子であり甥でもあり、時には叔父の名声ある名前を用いて、ベルナルド・カナレットと署名した。ドイツとポーランドでは、ベロットは叔父の名前であるカナレットを名乗っていた。これにより多少の混乱が生じたが、ベロットの作品はカナレットのものよりも色彩がより暗く、雲や影の描写においてオランダ絵画により近いものとなっている。 ベロットの作風は、建築や自然の眺望を精巧に描き出すこと、そして各場所特有の光の質感を表現することに特徴づけられている。ベロットをはじめとするヴェネツィアのヴェドゥータの巨匠たちが、都市景観の卓越した精密さを追求するためにカメラ・オブスクラを使用した可能性は十分にある。
