Franz Johann Heinrich Nadorp
Deutscher Romantiker in Rom
Franz Johann Heinrich Nadorp war ein deutscher Maler, der hauptsächlich in Rom arbeitete und lebte. Nadorp wurde in Isselburg in eine Künstlerfamilie geboren. Er war der einzige Sohn von Johann Theodor Nadorp und Gertrud Anna Stroof. Nach seiner Ausbildung an der Stadtschule Anholt wurde er im Alter von 20 Jahren durch ein Stipendium seines Landsmannes Fürst Constantin zu Salm-Salm an der Akademie der bildenden Künste Prag aufgenommen, wo er sich bei seinem Lehrer Joseph Bergler zum Historienmaler ausbilden ließ. Nadorp war der Lieblingsschüler Berglers. 1822 erhielt er die Goldmedaille der Akademie. Als 1826 sein Mentor starb, brach Nadorp seine Zelte in Prag ab und kehrte 1827 für einige Monate in seinen Heimatbezirk Anholt in Isselburg zurück. Im Herbst 1827 reiste Nadorp mit seinem Gefährten, dem Fürsten Franz von Salm-Salm, nach Rom. Die Stadt Rom zog damals viele deutsche Künstler an, wie Peter Cornelius, Johann Friedrich Overbeck und Julius Schnorr von Carolsfeld. Nadorp fand schnell Anschluss an die Gruppe deutscher Künstler, die „Nazarener“ genannt wurden. Er war einer der Gründer des Römischen Künstlerbundes (1829) und des Deutschen Künstlervereins (1845). Die Jahre 1840–1850 gehören zu seinen fruchtbarsten Schaffensperioden. Zahlreiche Zeichnungen sind erhalten. Während dieser Zeit lernte Nadorp König Ludwig I. von Bayern kennen, und sie schlossen eine Freundschaft. 1859 wurde Nadorp von König Friedrich Wilhelm IV. von Preußen empfangen, was zu seinem ersten Regierungsauftrag führte. Nadorp verließ Rom in den fast 50 Jahren seiner dortigen Tätigkeit nur selten. 1862 kehrte er für kurze Zeit in seine Heimatstadt zurück. Für seine Taufkirche St. Pankratius schuf er ein Altarbild Die Darstellung Jesu im Tempel und zeichnete die alte Stadtkirche kurz vor ihrem Abriss. 1876 gewährte ihm Fürst Alfred I. zu Salm-Salm eine jährliche Rente. Nadorp, der stilistisch als deutscher romantischer Maler gilt, starb kurz darauf in Rom und wurde auf dem Campo Santo Teutonico neben dem Petersdom im Vatikan beigesetzt. Sein gesamter Nachlass ging an die Fürsten zu Salm-Salm über und ist heute noch im Museum Wasserburg Anholt sowie in der Pfarrkirche St. Pankratius zu sehen.
