Simon Vouet
Introdujo el barroco italiano
Simon Vouet fue un pintor y dibujante francés, que hoy quizás sea más recordado por ayudar a introducir el estilo barroco italiano de la pintura en Francia. Simon Vouet nació en París. Su padre Laurent era pintor y le enseñó los rudimentos del arte. El hermano de Simon, Aubin Vouet, y su nieto Ludovico Dorigny también fueron pintores. Simon comenzó su carrera pictórica como retratista. A los 14 años viajó a Inglaterra para pintar un retrato por encargo y en 1611 formó parte de la comitiva del Barón de Sancy, embajador francés en el Imperio Otomano, con el mismo propósito. Permaneció en Italia hasta 1627, principalmente en Roma, donde el estilo barroco estaba volviéndose dominante. Era un académico natural, que absorbía lo que veía y estudiaba, y lo destilaba en su pintura: la iluminación dramática de Caravaggio; el manierismo italiano; el colorido de Paolo Veronese y la perspectiva di sotto in su o en escorzo; y el arte de los Carracci, Guercino, Lanfranco y Guido Reni. El inmenso éxito de Vouet en Roma condujo a su elección como presidente de la Accademia di San Luca en 1624.
