Simon Vouet
Introduceerde Italiaanse barok
Simon Vouet was een Franse schilder en tekenaar, die tegenwoordig vooral wordt herinnerd om zijn rol bij het introduceren van de Italiaanse barokke schilderstijl in Frankrijk. Simon Vouet werd geboren in Parijs. Zijn vader Laurent was ook schilder en leerde hem de grondbeginselen van de kunst. Zijn broer Aubin Vouet en zijn kleinzoon Ludovico Dorigny waren eveneens schilders. Simon begon zijn schilderscarrière als portretschilder. Op veertienjarige leeftijd reisde hij naar Engeland om een opdrachtportret te schilderen en in 1611 maakte hij deel uit van de entourage van de Baron de Sancy, de Franse ambassadeur bij het Osmaanse Rijk, met hetzelfde doel. Hij bleef tot 1627 in Italië, voornamelijk in Rome, waar de barokke stijl steeds dominantere vormen aannam. Hij was van nature academisch ingesteld, absorbeerde wat hij zag en bestudeerde, en verwerkte dit in zijn schilderkunst: het dramatische licht van Caravaggio; de Italiaanse maniërisme; de kleurgebruik van Paolo Veronese en het di sotto in su-perspectief of verkortingsperspectief; en de kunst van de Carracci, Guercino, Lanfranco en Guido Reni. Vouets enorme succes in Rome leidde tot zijn verkiezing tot voorzitter van de Accademia di San Luca in 1624.
