William Blake
Visionärer romantischer Dichter und Künstler
William Blake war ein englischer Dichter, Maler und Grafiker. Zu seinen Lebzeiten weitgehend unbeachtet, gilt Blake heute als eine Schlüsselfigur in der Geschichte der Dichtung und der bildenden Kunst der Romantik. Was er seine prophetischen Werke nannte, wurde vom Kritiker des 20. Jahrhunderts, Northrop Frye, als „das im Verhältnis zu seinen Verdiensten am wenigsten gelesene Korpus der englischsprachigen Dichtung“ beschrieben. Seine visuelle Kunst führte den Kritiker des 21. Jahrhunderts, Jonathan Jones, dazu, ihn als „bei weitem den größten Künstler, den Großbritannien je hervorgebracht hat“, zu bezeichnen. Im Jahr 2002 wurde Blake in der BBC-Umfrage der 100 größten Briten auf Platz 38 gewählt. Obwohl er sein ganzes Leben in London verbrachte, mit Ausnahme von drei Jahren in Felpham, schuf er ein vielfältiges und symbolträchtiges Œuvre, das die Vorstellungskraft als „den Körper Gottes“ oder „die menschliche Existenz selbst“ begriff.
