William Blake
Poète et artiste romantique visionnaire
William Blake était un poète, peintre et graveur anglais. Largement méconnu de son vivant, Blake est aujourd’hui considéré comme une figure emblématique de l’histoire de la poésie et des arts visuels à l’époque romantique. Ce qu’il appelait ses œuvres prophétiques a été décrit par le critique du XXe siècle Northrop Frye comme formant « ce qui, proportionnellement à ses mérites, constitue le corpus de poésie le moins lu en langue anglaise ». Son talent artistique visuel a conduit le critique du XXIe siècle Jonathan Jones à le proclamer « de loin le plus grand artiste que la Grande-Bretagne ait jamais produit ». En 2002, Blake a été classé 38e dans le sondage de la BBC sur les 100 plus grands Britanniques. Bien qu’il ait vécu toute sa vie à Londres, sauf pendant trois ans passés à Felpham, il a produit une œuvre diversifiée et riche en symboles, qui considérait l’imagination comme « le corps de Dieu » ou « l’existence humaine elle-même ».
