William Blake
Poeta e artista romantico visionario
William Blake era un poeta, pittore e incisore inglese. Largamente ignorato durante la sua vita, Blake è oggi considerato una figura fondamentale nella storia della poesia e delle arti visive dell’Età Romantica. Ciò che egli chiamava le sue opere profetiche fu definito dal critico del XX secolo Northrop Frye come “ciò che, in proporzione ai suoi meriti, è il corpus di poesia meno letto nella lingua inglese”. La sua abilità artistica visiva portò il critico del XXI secolo Jonathan Jones a dichiararlo “di gran lunga il più grande artista che la Gran Bretagna abbia mai prodotto”. Nel 2002, Blake si classificò al 38º posto nel sondaggio della BBC sui 100 più grandi britannici. Sebbene abbia vissuto tutta la sua vita a Londra, tranne per tre anni trascorsi a Felpham, produsse un’opera varia e ricca di simbolismo, che considerava l’immaginazione come “il corpo di Dio” o “l’esistenza umana stessa”.
