William Blake
Poeta e artista romântico visionário
William Blake foi um poeta, pintor e gravador inglês. Amplamente desconhecido durante sua vida, Blake é agora considerado uma figura seminal na história da poesia e das artes visuais da Era Romântica. O que ele chamava de suas obras proféticas foi descrito pelo crítico do século XX, Northrop Frye, como formando “o que, em proporção aos seus méritos, é o corpo de poesia menos lido na língua inglesa”. Sua habilidade artística visual levou o crítico do século XXI, Jonathan Jones, a proclamá-lo “de longe o maior artista que a Grã-Bretanha já produziu”. Em 2002, Blake ficou em 38º lugar na pesquisa da BBC sobre os 100 maiores britânicos. Embora tenha vivido toda a sua vida em Londres, exceto por três anos passados em Felpham, ele produziu uma obra diversa e ricamente simbólica, que via a imaginação como “o corpo de Deus” ou “a própria existência humana”.
