Girl with a Pearl Earring by Johannes Vermeer, c. 1665

Johannes Vermeer’s 'Girl with a Pearl Earring' is often called the 'Mona Lisa of the North,' painted around 1665 as a 'tronie'—a study of an imaginary character rather than a specific person. The young woman turns over her shoulder with lips slightly parted, as if caught in a fleeting moment of conversation, while her luminous pearl earring and vibrant blue-and-yellow headscarf glow against the dark void. This masterpiece of Dutch Baroque art hangs in the Mauritshuis in The Hague, where its mysterious gaze has inspired a best-selling novel and a major motion picture.

Interpretation Content

Rereading Vermeer's Girl with a Pearl Earring on October 11, International Day of the Girl, what moves us most is not the pearl but the unnamed girl herself. She is not a portrait of a specific person but a tronie—a study of an idealized character, expression, and costume popular in the seventeenth-century Netherlands. Precisely because she has no name, she has become one of the most famous girls in history. She turns toward us from a dark background, lips slightly parted, as if she has just been called or is about to answer. Vermeer models her cheek with soft side light and animates lips and eyes with moist highlights, suspending a moment of breath. The blue-and-yellow turban and the point of light on her earring flicker in the dark void, at once exotic and intimate, drawing her closer to the viewer. Painted around 1665, it is a Dutch Baroque masterpiece, now in the Mauritshuis, The Hague. She has no story, yet she has inspired novels and films; she is silent, yet questions us with her gaze. International Day of the Girl reminds us that every girl should not be merely an image to be looked at, but should possess her own name, voice, and future.
