Officer and Laughing Girl
circa 1657
Vermeer invites us to peek into a private moment where a soldier in a massive black hat flirts with a laughing girl over a glass of wine. The sunlight pouring from the left window is classic Vermeer, highlighting the girl's joy and the detailed map of Holland on the wall. That map is a real historical document, reflecting Dutch pride in their expanding global trade during the Golden Age. Interestingly, the officer is painted much larger than the girl, a deliberate perspective trick that makes him feel like an overwhelming, imposing force in her small world.
