Aspects of Negro Life; Song of the Towers by Aaron Douglas, 1934

Aaron Douglas painted this striking mural in 1934 as part of a four-part series called 'Aspects of Negro Life,' commissioned for the New York Public Library's 135th Street Branch. The piece captures the Great Migration, showing a central figure blowing a horn, surrounded by geometric shapes and silhouettes representing the journey from the rural South to the industrial North. Douglas, often called the 'father of African American art,' used his signature style of concentric circles and flat, stylized figures to blend Cubism with African art motifs. It's a powerful visual anthem of hope, struggle, and the search for freedom during the Harlem Renaissance.
