Opportunity Vol. 3, no. 36 Cover
1925
Aaron Douglas, often called the father of African American art, created this striking cover for Opportunity magazine during the height of the Harlem Renaissance. The bold, black silhouette of a figure gazing toward a glowing star is framed by concentric rings that look like ripples of sound or radiating light. This signature style blended Art Deco geometry with African motifs to visually define a cultural movement, turning a simple magazine cover into a powerful symbol of Black aspiration and identity in the 1920s.
