A Boor Asleep
c. 1630 - c. 1638
Adriaen Brouwer was the master of capturing the messy, unglamorous side of 17th-century tavern life, and this slumbering peasant is a perfect example. With his head thrown back and mouth agape, the man is completely passed out on a humble wooden stool, oblivious to the shadowy figures huddled around a fire in the background. Brouwer’s loose, energetic brushstrokes give the scene a raw, almost chaotic energy, perfectly capturing the fleeting moment of a deep, drunken nap. He actually lived a wild life himself, often painting these rowdy scenes from inside actual taverns—and even spent time in prison for his antics!
