The Foot Operation
ca. 1636
Adriaen Brouwer was the master of painting the gritty, unglamorous side of life, and this scene is a perfect example of his dark humor. We're witnessing a painful 'foot operation'—likely the removal of a corn or wart—performed by a quack surgeon while the patient grimaces, seemingly more annoyed than in agony. Look closely at the old woman in the background; her expression is a mix of sympathy and morbid curiosity that makes the whole scene feel like a slapstick comedy. Brouwer spent much of his life in taverns and even prisons, which gave him a unique, unfiltered perspective on the lower classes of 17th-century Flanders.
