Young Herdsmen with Cows by Aelbert Cuyp, ca. 1655-60

Aelbert Cuyp was the absolute master of making cows look majestic, and this 17th-century masterpiece is a perfect example. Notice how the golden sunlight bathes the resting cattle, turning ordinary farm animals into glowing, almost royal subjects against a dramatic, cloud-filled sky. Cuyp specialized in these idyllic Dutch landscapes, often using a warm, hazy light that makes the whole scene feel like a perfect late summer afternoon. It’s no wonder his work became wildly popular in England centuries later, where collectors were obsessed with his sun-drenched vision of the countryside.
