The Ascension
c. 1515
Look up! That's exactly what the disciples in this dramatic woodcut are doing, their faces turned toward the heavens in awe. Albrecht Altdorfer, a master of the German Renaissance and the Danube School, carved this scene around 1515 to capture the moment of Christ's Ascension. Notice the tiny figure of Christ floating in the clouds at the very top, framed by a heavenly portal, while the apostles below huddle around a rocky outcrop. You can even spot Altdorfer's signature 'A' monogram hiding in the upper left corner of the clouds!
