Two Studies for a Madonna with Child
ca. 1514 - 1519
Albrecht Dürer was a master of preparation, and this sketch reveals his meticulous brainstorming process. Here we see two different studies for a 'Virgin and Child' composition—the main figure sits regally with the baby Jesus, while a smaller, alternative pose sits in the bottom right corner. Notice how the main Mary's eyes are just blank ovals? Dürer was likely focusing on the complex, heavy folds of her robes and the tender interaction between mother and child before perfecting the facial features. It’s a fascinating behind-the-scenes look at how a Renaissance master worked out the kinks before creating a final masterpiece.
