Beatrice Hastings (in front of a door)
1915
Meet Beatrice Hastings, the fiery British poet and critic who was Amedeo Modigliani’s lover and muse for two turbulent years. Painted in 1915, she sports his signature look: an impossibly long, elegant neck, almond-shaped eyes that seem to look right through you, and a face elongated like an African mask. The dark hat and brooch contrast beautifully with her pale, rosy-cheeked face against the rustic wooden door behind her. Modigliani painted her over a dozen times, capturing her fierce independence before their notoriously volatile relationship finally ended in a dramatic split.
