Madam Pompadour

Amedeo Modigliani

1915

Madam Pompadour by Amedeo Modigliani, 1915

Modigliani was the undisputed king of the elongated neck, and this 1915 portrait proves it. The subject, ironically titled 'Madam Pompadour,' wears a hat so wide it looks like a flying saucer, framing a face stretched to elegant extremes. Notice the eyes? They have no pupils—a trick Modigliani picked up from African masks to make his subjects look like they were gazing into their own souls. It’s a perfect snapshot of the bohemian Paris art scene, painted just a few years before the artist’s tragic death at 35.
