Bathers
1874-75
Paul Cézanne was absolutely obsessed with the theme of bathers, returning to it throughout his entire career to experiment with form and color. In this early take on the subject, you can see his loose, energetic brushstrokes capturing a group of men relaxing by the water, some fully nude and others in trunks. It beautifully bridges the gap between the fleeting light of Impressionism and the solid, structured forms he would later become famous for, showing a master artist finding his unique voice. He would go on to paint over 200 versions of this scene!
