Two Children Teasing a Cat by Annibale Carracci

Annibale Carracci captures a delightfully mischievous moment where two children are tormenting a grumpy tabby cat with a dangling crayfish. The boy, dressed in a mustard-yellow tunic, dangles the crustacean right in the feline's face while the girl in pink watches with a smirk. This playful scene is a perfect example of Carracci's shift away from stiff Mannerism toward the lively, naturalistic style that helped kickstart the Baroque movement. He was one of the first artists to paint everyday people doing everyday, albeit slightly cruel, things with such warmth and realism.
