Napoleon on Horseback
Antoine-Jean Gros, a devoted fan of Napoleon, captures the Emperor in a moment of chaotic brilliance. While grand official portraits usually show Napoleon as a calm, god-like figure, this energetic sketch feels raw and immediate, with dark lines scribbling furiously to show the horse rearing up amidst fallen soldiers and battle smoke. Gros actually followed Napoleon's campaigns to sketch scenes from life, acting like an early artistic war correspondent—though he always made sure to make his boss look heroic, even when surrounded by the grim reality of the battlefield!
