Three Young Musicians
circa 1630
Step right up to this intimate Baroque concert! Antoine Le Nain (and possibly his brothers, who often collaborated so closely that art historians still argue over who painted what) captures three young musicians mid-performance against a dramatic, dark background. The boy on the left, draped in a striking red cloak, strums a lute while his companion in blue saws away at a violin. On the right, a red-headed singer clutches his sheet music, looking as if he's just hit a high note. Even a sleepy dog at their feet seems to be enjoying the private serenade. The Le Nain brothers were famous for elevating everyday people—peasants and musicians—giving them a quiet dignity that was quite revolutionary for 17th-century France.
