Friedrich the Great
1746
Antoine Pesne captures a surprisingly youthful and dashing Frederick the Great here, looking more like a high-fashion model than a gritty battlefield commander. Dressed in a luxurious blue velvet coat with heavy silver embroidery and the star of the Order of the Black Eagle, the Prussian King holds a baton of command while casually resting his hand on his sword. Behind him, a hazy battle scene rages with smoke and cannons, contrasting sharply with his pristine, powdered wig and calm expression. Painted in 1746, this portrait is pure royal PR, presenting the future 'Old Fritz'—who was actually only 34 here!—as a heroic military genius, even though he famously preferred playing the flute and writing French poetry to fighting.
