Golden summer, Eaglemont
Arthur Streeton captured the blistering heat of an Australian summer in this sun-drenched masterpiece, painted right on the spot at Eaglemont in 1889. Notice how the golden, dry grass seems to shimmer under the intense midday sun, while a tiny shepherd guides his flock across the vast, hazy landscape. As a leading figure of the Heidelberg School, Streeton broke away from European traditions to paint the unique, harsh light of the Australian bush, forever changing how the country saw itself. You can almost feel the dry heat and hear the buzzing cicadas just by looking at those brilliant blue skies and sparse gum trees.
