Madonna and Child

Bartolomé Estebán Murillo

c. 1655 - 1660

Madonna and Child by Bartolomé Estebán Murillo, c. 1655 - 1660

Murillo was famous for his sweet, idealized depictions of the Virgin Mary, and this glowing masterpiece is a perfect example. Mary sits gracefully on fluffy clouds, cradling a remarkably chubby and realistic baby Jesus who looks more like a playful toddler than a divine infant. The warm, golden background and soft, hazy lighting are classic Baroque touches that make the holy pair seem to float in a heavenly dream. Murillo's incredibly tender version of the Madonna was so popular that it influenced religious art across Europe for centuries, earning him the nickname 'the Spanish Raphael'.
