The Immaculate Conception

The Immaculate Conception by Bartolomé Estebán Murillo, 1675-1680

Murillo captures the Virgin Mary floating on a bed of clouds, her hands pressed to her chest in a gesture of humble devotion as she gazes upward toward a burst of divine light. Dressed in traditional white and a sweeping blue mantle that billows dramatically, she looks incredibly serene. Below her, a playful group of cherubs tumbles through the mist, holding lilies and palm fronds that symbolize her purity. This glowing, ethereal style became Murillo's signature, making his versions of the Immaculate Conception some of the most beloved religious images in 17th-century Spain.
