The Virgin and Child
c.1665 - c.1670
Murillo was the absolute master of making holy figures look incredibly human and sweet, and this tender moment between the Virgin Mary and baby Jesus is a perfect example of his signature style. Painted during the Spanish Baroque period, he uses soft, glowing light to make the figures pop against the dark background, creating an intimate scene framed within a painted oval. Unlike the stiff, formal religious art of earlier centuries, Murillo's Mary looks like a real, loving mother gazing out at the viewer, a sentimental approach that made him wildly popular across Europe.
