Street Musicians by Bernardo Strozzi, ca. 1630

Bernardo Strozzi, a former Capuchin monk known as 'The Painting Monk,' captures the raucous energy of a street performance with incredible intimacy. The trio leans aggressively into the viewer's space: a man on the right blows fiercely into a shawm, a woman in the center plays a recorder with a bold, direct gaze, and a bearded figure on the left handles a bagpipe. The dramatic Baroque lighting (chiaroscuro) spotlights their flushed faces and rumpled clothes against a dark void, elevating these gritty 'low life' subjects into a vivid, noisy scene that feels surprisingly modern.
