Wool carder
Camille Pissarro, a founding father of Impressionism, often championed the dignity of rural labor over fancy city scenes. In this sketch, titled 'Cardeuse de laine' (Wool Carder), a peasant woman is captured mid-task, bundled in a bonnet and focused intently on preparing wool. Beside her, a large bouquet of flowers and a smaller figure add a touch of domestic softness to the hard work. The loose, energetic lines suggest Pissarro was sketching quickly from life, trying to catch the honest posture of the worker before she moved.
