Saint George

Saint George by Carlo Crivelli, 1472

Carlo Crivelli’s Saint George looks less like a battlefield warrior and more like a Renaissance fashion model decked out in the most expensive armor money could buy. Notice the lion heads on his shoulders and the fierce face on his waist plate—this guy is ready to intimidate dragons and impress the court. Standing triumphantly over a rather pathetic-looking dragon, he holds a candy-cane striped lance that adds a pop of color against the glittering gold background. Crivelli was famous for his obsession with texture and detail, making this saint look like he was carved from jewels and silk rather than just painted.
