The Bewitched Groom
1544-45
Hans Baldung Grien loved a good witch story, and this 1544 print is a perfect example of his dark humor. In a chaotic stable scene, a groom lies sprawled unconscious on the floor, his legs awkwardly splayed, while his horse rears up in panic above him. If you look closely at the upper right, you'll spot the culprit: a grinning witch wielding a torch, clearly having just cast a spell to ruin the poor man's day. Baldung was obsessed with the supernatural, often depicting witches as agents of chaos who disrupt the orderly world of men.
