Ecce Homo

Ecce Homo by Carlo Dolci

Carlo Dolci was a Florentine Baroque master basically famous for the 17th-century equivalent of the 'sad eyes' look. In this striking hexagonal panel, he depicts Christ as the Ecce Homo (Behold the Man), presenting a figure of quiet, dignified suffering rather than dramatic agony. Notice the incredibly soft, glowing skin and the rich blue drapery against the dark background—a classic Baroque trick called chiaroscuro to make the holy figure pop. Dolci was a perfectionist who painted very slowly, often creating multiple versions of the same subject because his devout clients simply couldn't get enough of his tear-jerking style.
