Caricature of a Man with a Large Nose
1855
Long before he became the master of light and water lilies, a teenage Claude Monet made a living drawing hilarious caricatures in the streets of Le Havre. This sketch features a dapper gentleman sporting a bowler hat and checkered trousers, but his most striking feature is a nose so enormous it practically has its own gravitational pull. These early, exaggerated portraits were so popular that Monet sold them for a tidy profit, honing the sharp observational skills he would later use to capture the fleeting beauty of the natural world.
