Poppy Field (Giverny)
1890
Monet was obsessed with capturing the fleeting effects of light, and this vibrant field of poppies near his home in Giverny is a perfect example. Notice how he didn't paint individual flowers, but rather used quick, dabbing brushstrokes to create a shimmering sea of red and green that seems to dance in the breeze. The tall, slender poplar trees act like sentinels guarding the horizon, a motif he would return to again and again in his famous series paintings. It's a snapshot of a perfect summer day, frozen in time by a master of Impressionism.
