Seated Peasant with Jug
c. 1763
See those initials "A.O." in the bottom corner? They belong to Adriaen van Ostade, a master of depicting peasant life, but this drawing is actually a tribute by Cornelis Ploos van Amstel. Ploos van Amstel was absolutely obsessed with Ostade's work, spending years trying to reverse-engineer his techniques and even inventing special color printing processes to mimic the old masters. Here, he captures a wonderfully relaxed, rotund figure enjoying a drink with his foot propped up, perfectly nailing that cozy, 17th-century tavern vibe that made the original artist so famous.
