Scroll of the Six Patriarchs of Bodhidharma, Silk, 33.8x219.5
Dai Jin, the founder of the Ming Dynasty's Zhe School, crafted this magnificent handscroll to honor the first six patriarchs of Chan (Zen) Buddhism. On the right, figures gather in a misty landscape of ancient pines and rugged rocks, painted with the vigorous brushstrokes that define his style. The massive block of calligraphy on the left serves as a historical guestbook, where generations of scholars added their inscriptions after admiring the work. Measuring over two meters long, this silk scroll was designed to be unrolled right-to-left, revealing the spiritual lineage of Bodhidharma in an intimate, cinematic sequence.
