Hollyhocks, Rocks and Butterflies (Hanging Scroll), Paper, 114.5x39.5
Dai Jin, a master of the Ming Dynasty's Zhe School, captures a fleeting moment of nature in this elegant hanging scroll. A tall hollyhock plant rises gracefully from a jagged, ink-washed rock, its broad leaves and vibrant pink flowers reaching toward the sky. Two butterflies dance around the blooms, their wings detailed with fine brushwork that contrasts with the bolder strokes of the rock below. The composition is topped with poetic calligraphy, blending visual beauty with literary depth in a classic Chinese style.
