Abstraction Based on Sails, V
1921
David Kakabadzé, a Georgian artist, created this dynamic composition in 1921, right in the thick of the Cubist movement. Instead of painting a literal boat, he shattered the image of sails into a kaleidoscope of geometric shapes—triangles, curves, and checkerboard patterns. The cool blues and warm ochres dance together, capturing the feeling of wind and movement rather than just the look of a ship. It's a perfect example of how early 20th-century artists wanted to show multiple perspectives at once, turning a simple seascape into a puzzle of pure form and color.
