Abstraction Based on Sails, X
1921
David Kakabadzé, a pioneer of Cubism in Georgia, takes the classic image of sailing ships and shatters it into a vibrant, floating puzzle of geometry in this 1921 work. Sharp triangles of pastel yellow and lavender collide with dark, heavy blocks, while wavy teal lines at the bottom suggest the rhythmic motion of ocean waves. Kakabadzé was fascinated by breaking down reality into pure form—and fun fact: he was also a scientist who pioneered early concepts of holography! This piece feels like a snapshot of a boat dissolving into light and color.
